Professor Jean Li discusses the well-known and often repeated characterization that Ancient Egyptian women were “better off” than their counterparts in other ancient civilizations. To what extent was this true? Was it equally true both in the public (governmental) sphere and in the private sphere? What were the activities in which women engaged, and how did women exercise public and private power in society?
