Sally Katary Memorial Lecture 2021

karnak 2011 hypostyle cols 1 PICT01512021's Sally Katary Memorial Lecture took place on Saturday 15th May 2021 at 1:00pm EST as a virtual event held online.

The presenters were Prof. Jean Revez, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and Prof. Peter Brand, University of Memphis. Our co-presenters are the directors of the Karnak Great Hypostyle Hall Project. Their joint presentation was entitled:

Gaining New Perspectives on the Hypostyle Hall at Karnak: The Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) – University of Memphis Project at Karnak”.

Since 2011, the project has been recording and studying the complex decoration on the columns of the Great Hypostyle Hall in the Temple of Amen-Re at Karnak. With generous funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the US National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and other agencies, the project has employed photogrammetry and other emerging technologies to enable researchers to gain new insights into the elaborate decorative program and complex epigraphic history of the columns, as well as the virtual reconstruction of fallen columns that are no longer in situ

With a focus on the most recent work carried out during the past few years both off the field (the production of 2D and 3D sets of data of the columns) and on site in Egypt (the ongoing study of the original state of the Hall before its partial collapse at the end of the 19th Century), the presenters will spell out the main objectives of their undertaking, the means by which they wish to attain them and the major results achieved so far.

This was a fund-raising event in aid of the Sally L.D. Katary Travel Scholarship.
